Distinction (Student Craft) — AGDA Awards 2021

A Taste of Home is a design response to the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) 2020 brief, which asked designers to create a typographic work that explores the theme of migration in nuanced and unique ways — drawing from natural, historical, cultural or global perspectives, to create a thoughtful publication with an insightful, personal understanding of migration.

The Chinese migration experience is explored through the lens of food, to reveal the way it intrinsically links the homeland and the adopted country. My publication explores the three facets of life tied to it — work, community and family, through a layered, vibrant, bilingual book representative of Chinese migrants’ diverse and complex experiences.

A Taste of Home seeks to sensitively, yet joyfully, examine how food plays an integral role in the way Chinese immigrants make a new life for themselves in foreign lands, whilst also paying homage to their roots and culture.

I would like to acknowledge the Gadigal and Bidjigal people of the Eora Nation, on whose unceded lands I live and work, and pay my respects to their elders — past, present and future. This is, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
